Decorative Fire Grate

Categories: ,

I opened up the fireplace in my Victorian terrace and bought a cast iron bedroom fireplace to put in. I hadn’t opened up the chimney, so it was just for looks that I installed it. The one I bought needing restoring, but it was also missing the front, so I decided to make a bespoke stained glass fire grate. Rather than having a fire in the grate I added church candles which had a bright flame and shone through the coloured glass beautifully, specially in the dark! handmade using traditional stained glass techniques, I used traditional Victorian colours and shapes.  Although this can’t be used with a working fire as the lead would melt, it can be used with large church candles burning in the fireplace.  This create visible flickering on the walls and light within the glass itself.
